NYC steamfitter union heads busted in bribery scheme

The politically connected leader of the New York City steamfitters union flushed his members down the tubes, prosecutors charged Thursday.

New York State Trades Council President James Cahill, 71, ran a bribery scheme starting in Oct. 2018 with 10 other members of Local 638 that earned over $100,000, much of it through cash payments, according to an indictment filed in Manhattan Federal Court.

Cahill’s group of crooked current and former union members committed the ultimate act of betrayal by urging employers to not hire union labor in exchange for bribes, according to the indictment.

Cahill, 71, was caught on a wiretap screwing over his members, advising an employer in Oct. 2019 to “tell everyone to go f–k themselves” because “if you become union, you’ll have 12 f–king guys on your back,” according to prosecutors.
