Obama’s DACA Executive Order Was Unconstitutional

Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced Tuesday that the Trump administration would end DACA — Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals — the Obama program that has allowed immigrants who arrived here illegally as children to remain in the U.S. since 2012.

But what Sessions said Tuesday was glaringly hypocritical.

Forget for a moment about how you feel about DACA. It’s obviously a serious subject that threatens to upend so many lives on one hand and also has considerable enduring implications for America’s broken immigration system on the other. No one should dismiss the gravity of this issue, and that is certainly not my intention here.

Obama Threatens Trump Over DACA Phase Out

Former President Barack Obama criticized the Trump administration’s decision to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program (DACA) in a statment posted to his Facebook page today.

In his statement, Obama did not directly mention President Donald Trump by name but made clear that he disagrees with the administration’s decision to end DACA, which protects young people who were brought to the United States illegally as children from being deported.

Many expected Obama to issue a response to the decision, as he pledged he would speak out during the final press conference of his presidency about any action taken against Dreamers, as DACA recipients are sometimes known.

Obama started his statement today by saying that while people can disagree about how to have an immigration system where “everybody plays by the rules,” that is not what Trump’s decision to end DACA is about.

“This is about young people who grew up in America –- kids who study in our schools, young adults who are starting careers, patriots who pledge allegiance to our flag. These Dreamers are Americans in their hearts, in their minds, in every single way but one: on paper,” Obama wrote.
