While much of the country was in some state of lock down due to COVID-19, up to 26 million Americans took to the streets in protest in what officials say may be the single largest protest movement in American history.
Despite up to 26 million Americans foregoing social distancing, officials say that protests did not increase the spread of COVID-19.
Estimates now suggest between 15 to 26 million Americans have taken part in the ongoing Black Lives Matter protests that have sometimes devolved into riots following the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis police custody.
Officials believe that Black Lives Matter may now be the largest protest movement in American history.
Steven Horsford (D-NV4) has repeatedly slammed the Trump administration over what he claims is “racism” or “anti-LGBT” policies.
Meanwhile, Shelbie Bostedt, who has served as the two-term African-American Congressman’s Press Secretary since June 2019, has tweeted the word “n*gga” or “n*ggas” over 20 times, as well as tweeting the hashtag “#DirtyMexicans.”
Bostedt has mocked Indian accents and taken particular aim at Asians, in a series of tweets dating back to 2013.
“THERE IS AN ASIAN BRIGADE IN MCCARRAN. I REPEAT: ASIAN BRIGADE,” she tweeted, and in another racially motivated attack, said of Asian classmates: “There are almost too many stereotypes to count.”
A Chicago fireworks display celebrating Independence Day has been cancelled due to fears of large congregations becoming COVID-19 infection hotspots, even as the city allows thousands to march in Chicago’s North Side to elevate black LGBT voices.
ABC7 reported that roughly 25,000 people were expected to turn out to the Itasca fireworks display in Chicago before it was cancelled due to fear of spreading COVID-19, and its cancellation has left the fireworks industry experiencing financial trouble as small business struggle after months of intermittent lockdowns and restrictions.
A spokesperson for the American Pyrotechnics Association said that “until large gatherings can happen again, the firework industry is not going to survive,” and added that around 80% of all American fireworks are used on Independence Day. One local pyrotechnics vendor said that he had over half a million pounds of explosives in stock, waiting for use.
While the bias against conservatives on social media is nothing new, solutions for it are few and far between. No one wants to lose or abandon a platform full of all their old photos, memories, and contacts that they spent years building and accumulating. While alternatives to major brands like Twitter and Facebook exist, they quite frankly for a lack of a better word usually “suck.”
When the Twitter alternative Parler came along, I created a throwaway account to check it out, realized no one was on it, and never thought to check back. Then all of a sudden it was trending on Twitter and everyone was jumping over because influencers were promoting it (and if I know influencers, that means they’re getting paid.)
I was alerted immediately that people had found an imposter account using my verified Twitter/Instagram handle of @iheartmindy that was mimicking my real account with the banner and profile pics and making disgusting and sexually vulgar comments as if it were me. So I go over to report it as do multitudes of other people…and nothing happened. I actually got into a Twitter beef with Dan Bongino over it because I made a comment on one of his posts where he was talking about how amazing Parler was and I mentioned this issue, which he quickly internalized and got extremely rude over. Apparently he’s part owner of it, and I was unintentionally crapping on his parade.
A group of protesters marched to the home of Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan on Sunday afternoon, upset that she pledged to dismantle the police-free “Capitol Hill Organized Protest,” known as CHOP.
Seattle City Councilwoman Kshama Sawant joined a group of dozens of demonstrators gathered at Durkan’s home, holding signs, chanting, and demanding she leave the area alone or meet protesters’ demands.
Durkan said last week police would soon return to Seattle’s East Precinct, which has been overrun by protesters who set up the CHOP zone, but gave no timetable.
Demonstrators have controlled the six-block area since June 8, saying they will not leave until the city meets a list of demands.
Seattle Police Chief Carmen Best asked why two African-Americans were dead at a place that “clamed to be working for Black Lives Matter” after a 16-year-old teenager was killed inside the CHOP police-free zone.
Despite organizers urging occupiers to abandon the CHOP zone last week, it still remains very much active and as crime-ridden as ever.
A 19-year-old man was shot dead and another wounded during an incident in the area two weekends ago.
That was followed by a similar incident in the early hours of Monday which left a 16-year-old dead and a 14-year-old critically wounded.
Demonstrators marched towards Downing Street on Saturday in support of Black Trans Lives Matter, as annual Pride celebrations were forced to move online due to the coronavirus pandemic.
London’s Pride event, which normally attracts thousands of people supporting the LGBTQ+ community, has been postponed this summer due to COVID-19.
Although the main celebration did not take place, a number of demonstrators held a Black Trans Lives Matter march to honour black transgender people and raise awareness of the violence and prejudice they face.
Demonstrators gathered at Hyde Park Corner before their march, with many following coronavirus safety guidance by wearing face masks and also carrying flowers as the organisers had requested.
